A detailed look at what Texas will face at Kansas State

On this week’s edition of The Flagship Podcast, we welcome KC Sports Network’s John Kurtz to show us the Longhorns’ game at No. 13 Kansas State (6-2, 4-1 Big 12).

Kurtz, who has covered K-State for years, was as surprised as most of Wildcat Nation Saturday when K-State blanked Oklahoma State in Manhattan 48-0 — a week after the Cowboys came from behind to knock off Texas 41-34. in Stillwater. The Longhorns (5-3, 3-2) had last week off.

Texas, which has won two in a row in Manhattan, was an early 1-point favorite against Kansas State in a game that begins at 6 p.m. CT on FS1. Early forecasts call for temperatures in the 50s with a chance of showers.

“Obviously, you take out the point difference between Kansas State and Texas and Oklahoma State,” Kurtz said. “Everything seemed to go Kansas State’s way against the Cowboys. You can’t plan for that every week.”

The big question for K-State heading into the Texas game is who will play quarterback for the Wildcats?

Will Howardwho was trying to keep his redshirt, had to play in his second straight game against Oklahoma State (because the starter Adrian Martinez still nursing a knee injury). Howard had the game of his life at K-State, completing 21 of 37 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns, including a 38-yarder on fourth-and-10 on the Wildcats’ opening drive.

K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez ran for 565 yards (6.1 yards per carry) and nine rushing TDs on 62.1 percent completion with four TDs through the air and zero interceptions. But Martinez has a knee injury that has kept him out of all but one series, a 38-28 loss at No. 7 TCU and a complete shutout against Oklahoma State.

Kurtz says if Martinez can’t play football to his full potential, K-State’s coaches should stick with Howard at quarterback.

“K-State fans got a rough first impression of Howard when he was thrown into the fire because of (then-starter’s) injury Skylar Thompson during the covid season in 2020 and in place in 2021, including against Texas last season,” Kurtz said. “But now we’re seeing mature quarterbacks and the game has slowed down for him.”

The game against Texas will feature two of the top running backs in the Big 12 at leading rusher Bijan Robinson (115 ypg, 5.7 ypc, 11 TDs rushing) and second leading rusher Deuce Vaughn K-State, who is averaging 112.8 ypg, 5.9 ypc and five rushing TDs.

Robinson needs just 80 yards to reach 1,000 yards for the season, while Vaughn needs 92 yards.

Kurtz breaks down the Wildcats’ offense, defense and special teams and offers his thoughts on how Saturday night will play out.
