Jekyll and… Tyler Galpin? After getting close to Wednesday Addams, Tyler was exposed and Hyde. Tyler was behind the mysterious and gruesome attacks on Nevermore Academy, while also being controlled by Marilyn Thornhill, known as Laurel Gates. HollywoodLife spoke EXCLUSIVELY with Hunter Doohanwho admitted early on that he “didn’t know the full extent of who Tyler was”. Wednesday way.
However, he had a “pretty good feeling” about Tyler being Hyde as the final chemistry rolled around. “I had some scenes with him. Jenna [Ortega] and Percy [Hynes White], who plays Xavier. In those scenes, I think they ended up cutting because they were too suspicious, but there were some darker things I could have played with to go there,” Hunter said.
Hyde is a terrifying monster with large eyes and razor sharp teeth. Hunter revealed his reaction to seeing Hyde for the first time. “Well, it was interesting because I first saw it with this sketch. Tim [Burton] he did it because Tim suggested it, but with that came the story of Tim waiting until I was booked to suggest it. I thought it was cool, but I’m not sure how to take it,” Hunter joked.
The finale features a brutal fight between Tyler/Hyde and Enid after she turns into a werewolf. Although it initially appears that Tyler did not make it out of the fight alive, he is seen being transported in an armored car as Wednesday departs Nevermore. Hunter played remarkably in the first season Your Honorand his character was shockingly killed off at the end of the season.
This time he made it out of the first season alive. “I was shocked and happy that I survived the first season,” Hunter said.
Thornhill warns Wednesday that normies like Tyler are just “pawns in a bigger game.” Wednesday remembers those words and knows that something more nefarious is likely to come. Hunter revealed what he knows about who this ultimate puppet master might be.
“Nothing to share. I honestly don’t know much though,” Hunter said HollywoodLife. “But I’m curious to see it. So I hope we get a second season. I feel like I’ve played different characters and I’ve only really played the actual character for about three scenes. I really hope I enjoy exploring more and also seeing what Tyler and Hyde are like without having a master in Thornhill.’
Hunter had to work on the side Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 1990s movies. She plays Christina Thornhill in the Netflix series. “Having Christina on the show was like we got her approval on it and we actually got to work with her and then they had scenes with her and Jenna was so amazing,” he said.
Despite her best efforts to avoid any mushy romance, Wednesday ends up having real feelings for Tyler. They even kiss each other before turning to her. Hunter considered if Tyler ever had any real feelings for Wednesday.
“I mean, I think Hyde infected his brain,” Hunter said. “There’s a certain appeal to Wednesday, but I think in the end this season it’s all been about him pulling one on it. We wanted that moment in episode 8 to feel really disruptive. Wednesday Addams is the type of character that a nice, nice guy shouldn’t fall in love with, but she does. And the fact that he’s also wrong about it is another gut punch.”
Hunter noted that “it will be interesting to see if there are any redeemable aspects to it [Tyler] because Hyde is taking over and he never got a chance to learn how to control it because Nevermore won’t let him in and she would never let his mom in. And then everything he’s done, every kill that happens in the season, is on Thornhill’s orders.’
Does Tyler feel any guilt for what he did? By the end of the season, Hunter doesn’t think so. “I think we played him with guilt and horror, but I don’t think there’s guilt at the end because it’s all just overcome with rage. I looked at it the way I looked at it his whole life, because his mother could have survived if Nevermore had helped him. I think Laurel Gates or Thornhill come in and help him realize that this is the life he was supposed to have, this is the life his mom was supposed to have, and he’s even more filled with hatred for Nevermore,” the actor said.
Wednesday it hasn’t been renewed for season 2 yet, but it’s almost certain. Hunter said HollywoodLife his hopes for Tyler after the first season. “I just want to explore what’s next for Tyler and if he’ll be back after Wednesday,” he said. “I think the thought that’s left at the end is that he’s really pissed off enough to transform into that armored vehicle and I suppose he’s going to get away. Wednesday now streaming on Netflix.
