Gators Down Bulldogs in Jacksonville Exhibition

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Florida baseball opened its fall exhibition season with an 8-4 victory over SEC rival Georgia in a 10-inning affair at 121 Financial Ballpark on Friday night.

With the win, Florida takes a 2-1 lead over Georgia in the fall exhibition series in Jacksonville.

Josh Rivera (3-for-5) and Jac Caglianone (3-for-5) paced the offense on a three-hit night. Rivera finished with one double, two singles, two runs, one RBI and one steal, while Caglianone had three singles with one run and one RBI. BT Riopelle (1-for-5) led the Gators with two runs.

Starting pitchers Hurston Waldrep and Jaden Woods traded shutouts over the first two innings, with Waldrep holding the Bulldogs to two hits while striking out the first unofficial shutout of his Gators career.

Florida pounced in the top of the third and put together a four-run frame that began with Caglianone’s Michael Robertson single homer. Rivera followed with an RBI single of his own to left field that scored Wyatt Langford, while Riopelle capped the blast with a two-run single to right that scored both Rivera and Langford.

Left-hander Pierce Coppola relieved Waldrep in the third and continued to work out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a 4-6-3 double play. That opened the door for the Gators to add, as Ty Evans led off the bottom half with a walk and eventually came around to score on a passed ball.

The Gators extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth, with Rivera starting things off with a single up the middle. After advancing to third on a stolen base and a passed ball, Rivera moved home on an infield RBI single by Cade Kurland. Florida tacked on a seventh run in the sixth as Tyler Shelnut led off with a single to left and later scored on a walk that was preceded by a single by Robertson.

Florida and Georgia traded runs in the seventh as the Bulldogs ended the Gators’ bid for a shutout. Rivera led off with a double and scored from second on a wild pitch. In the bottom half, Sebastian Murillo brought in Fernando Gonzalez with an RBI single to right field. The Bulldogs made it 8-2 in the eighth when Justin Thomas scored on a wild pitch and then drove in two runs in the ninth to make the final score 8-4.

After two shutout innings by Coppola in the third and fourth innings, the Gators held their own in the middle innings to keep Florida’s lead intact. Relievers Brandon Neely, Philip Abner, Chris Arroyo and Caglianone all pitched scoreless outings for the Orange & Blue.

Waldrep earned the win, throwing two shutout innings and giving up two hits and two walks. He took out one dough. Georgia shortstop Nolan Crisp was handed the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits and two walks over one inning of relief.

Caglianone got the save, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings with one walk allowed and one strikeout.

Robertson (2-for-3), Caglianone (3-for-5), Rivera (3-for-5) and Kurland (2-for-4) had multiple hits for Florida.
