An Alabama man was recently charged with the gruesome stabbing and dismembering death of his live-in girlfriend — all because she allegedly refused to have sex with him on his birthday.
Justin Fields38, is charged with one count of murder and one count of abuse of a corpse in the killing and subsequent mutilation of a 52-year-old man on October 22, 2022 Tammy Bailey.
According to online news site AL.com, Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey he said the knife was used both in killing Bailey and in abusing her body afterward.
She was stabbed more than 100 times.
In a recent update on the case, Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said the attacks were carried out with a survival-style knife that has an eight-inch blade. The victim’s body was found with one limb severed, the sheriff said. Her head was discovered at her feet.
In comments to AL.com, Moon said Fields confessed to the crime.
“He admitted to my investigator everything he did, so he was stable enough to know what he was doing,” Moon said, dismissing mental health concerns or any similar history as a possible excuse. “He was frustrated because he didn’t get what he wanted.
That night, defendant and his live-in girlfriend were out celebrating his birthday at several businesses in the Springville area before returning to Bailey’s home, where they lived together.
“He drank some brandy and then went to his bedroom and played the guitar,” Moon said. “He decided he wanted to have sex, so he went into her room and proposed to her. She rejected him and, according to his statement, he became frustrated and stabbed her in the chest.’
According to the sheriff, Fields told investigators he passed out, went to his room and fell asleep. When he woke up the next morning, he allegedly said he thought he had a bad dream and stabbed his girlfriend more than 100 times.
“We’re pretty sure she was dead on first strike,” Moon added. “When he got back there the next day, she wasn’t moving.
Fields then allegedly called his father, admitted he had done “something terrible” and expressed a desire to die by suicide. Defendant’s father then called a neighbor and a family member of Bailey’s. The woman showed up at the front door where the brutal death took place — but Fields refused to let her in.
“He’s telling her that what’s inside is horrible and she doesn’t want to see it,” Moon told AL.com. “He’s calling 911.
Blount County Sheriff’s deputies were initially called in response to a suspected shooting.
In the welfare check, they found the worst.
“The two investigators and the crime scene technician who was one of my patrol lieutenants that responded to the scene probably had almost 100 years of combined law enforcement experience and said it was the worst thing they had ever seen.” Moon told Birmingham ABC affiliate WBMA. “[T]hoses are images, mental images that you will never be able to erase.”
The defendant was taken into custody at the scene.
One representative arrived first.
“The perpetrator told him on camera that I did something wrong, there’s evidence in the house and if you go inside you’ll see it’s wrong,” Moon said in comments to Birmingham FOX affiliate WBRC.
The first responding deputy then told the defendant that he would be handcuffed for both of their safety because the deputy had a bad feeling about the initial discussion.
“It’s OK,” Fields reportedly said. “You’re going to arrest me anyway.
